Profile categories
Google Business Profile categories for therapists
We choose a Business Profile category in Google’s live chooser—not from a blog menu that will date—and only when eligibility already allows a listing. Linden Walk shows counselling services on a designed site; we do not freeze Google’s category list on this page, add broader labels for reach, or promise a category will make the profile show.
Example bespoke sites
Linden Walk is a designed example in Edinburgh. It is not a live Business Profile or a category screenshot.

Counselling and psychotherapy, named apart.
Choose the work that fits. Each has its own page, its own fee, and the same short way to write.

Counselling
A weekly place to start
£70
50 minutes · Edinburgh room or online
A weekly session for something you want to work on now. For adults, in Edinburgh or online.
Psychotherapy
Longer work, with its own page
£85
50 minutes · the pattern underneath
For a pattern that keeps returning, when a single conversation is not enough. Its own page, and its own fee.

Which are you asking about?
The form asks for counselling or psychotherapy, so the reply matches the work. It does not ask you to explain a history.

Live chooser, not a printed menu
Google’s interface is the list, and it changes. A copied category roundup on a marketing blog goes stale and invites labels that never fitted—this page deliberately has no menu.
Eligibility comes first: Business Profile eligibility and representation guidelines. Online-only practices may have no category decision until that question is answered—see Google Business Profile for online therapists.
| In a project | Left off |
|---|---|
| Pick in Google’s current UI | A frozen menu on this page |
| Primary label matches real work | Broader profession for reach |
| Extras only if true and allowed | Every adjacent category |
| Services on site are the check | Site says couples, profile does not |
| No rank promise from a label | Best category for every therapist |
Category agrees with the website
What a client books—counselling, psychotherapy, supervision—is the test. Structured data on your domain uses plain service names the pages show; they may be simpler than Google’s label but must not name a different profession.
Counsellor-specific profile alignment is Google Business Profile for counsellors; general setup is Google Business Profile for therapists.
Local pages and NAP
Town and service pages on the site carry the same work the category names—one location vs multiple therapy locations and local SEO for therapists cover room honesty without doorway towns.
We do not promise map-pack placement because the primary category was changed.
