Google Search Console for counsellors

What is worth looking at, and what will the reports refuse to tell you?

Verify the site, submit the sitemap, and use URL Inspection and the pages report to see whether a page is indexed. Performance shows impressions and clicks for queries Google reports. It does not show a ranking you can buy, and it does not list every person who asked an assistant about you.

Ownership and the sitemap

Use a domain property if you can verify by DNS, so www and non-www are covered. Otherwise verify the exact address the site uses. Submit the sitemap after launch, then check that the pages you care about are not excluded for noindex, a redirect, or a duplicate.

At handover we connect Search Console when you can grant access. The property stays yours.

How to read it without inventing a story

We do not send clinical information to analytics. Search Console receives the public pages, not the contents of an enquiry.

  • Indexed is not the same as “page one”
  • A query with impressions and no clicks may be the wrong title, or simply a query you should not chase
  • A drop after a redesign is a reason to check redirects and coverage, not a reason to assume the practice has vanished
  • Generative AI reports, where Google shows them, have their own limits and are not a citation log for every assistant
